Dr. Gavin Horn, Director of Research at the Illinois Fire Service Institute, is a recipient of the 2017 Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence Award.
Horn is among seven honorees for this prestigious award. He formally received the honor at a reception hosted by Chancellor Robert Jones on April 6.
“We nominated Gavin because of his ongoing contributions to fire service and particularly for the work he has done to advance health and safety of firefighters on the fireground,” IFSI Director Royal Mortenson said.
Horn is also a senior research scientist and visiting lecturer in MechSE and director of the Advanced Materials Testing and Evaluation Laboratory (AMTEL) – housed in MechSE – a state-of-the-art facility for mechanical testing of coupon specimens to determine baseline engineering properties, conduct sophisticated biaxial testing, and perform full field optical stress analysis.
Horn has led the research team at IFSI since 2004 and works closely with other academic departments, national organizations and fire departments across the U.S. He has conducted research in firefighter health and safety, material testing and design, and nondestructive evaluation. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association’s Technical Committee on Special Operations Clothing & Equipment and is on the advisory board for UL’s Firefighter Safety Research Institute. He earned a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois in 2004.
The CAPE Award recognizes the importance of contributions made by academic professionals at Illinois.
IFSI provides training at its Champaign campus, offers hands-on classes for fire departments at Regional Training Centers and local fire stations across the state, and supports research that focuses on firefighter health and safety, first responder technology development, and material testing.
