Analytical and Computational Mechanics Lab
The primary focus of the Analytical & Computational Mechanics Lab is to transform existing analysis tools into design optimization tools. For example, finite element analyses are often performed to predict the stress of existing structural designs, whereas our finite element-based optimization is able to generate designs that satisfy constraints on stress and at the same time minimize mass. Currently these techniques have been used to design automobile components such as crankshafts and connecting rods, manufacturing processes such as polymer extrusion, welding, and casting, and linkages such as bucket loader mechanisms. The analyses utilize nonlinear transient finite element programs and multibody dynamics software.
